I'm back, I've moved and settled. Soon I'll get a studio and equipment so I can resum filming. It' shouldn't be long now. I've completed the promo. I think I may revisit since there are some goofy things in it that are not quite right (that only I seem to notice.) Anyway I'll hope to get MY promo short done (as in with me in it.) Production Notes

Well, things are moving. Slowly, but moving. We have the green rig complete (I'll post pics when I get a little snapshot camera.) I also will have the full Sith costume complete this month. My wife will have some photo shots on this as well. I'm working on several digital characters to replace acters since I don't have the budget to create costumes. No problem, good practice anyway. I have a fantastic Sidius, Reelo (rodain), and prison gaurd character 95% complete. We should have enough to start doing some real work this month once the SIth costume is complete. I'll buy mine outright to save time. I will get all this done for sure.

I've completed a green matte for use in production. We did a few test shots in what was going to be the green room, they did not turn out all that well. It was very clear the room was too small to light correctly. I managed to rethink the idea and came up with a better way to film it. I'll continue to gather constumes and push forward. It's bee way too slow going to really finish this by 2006, SO I'm working on some of the scenes now to make up for it. I have started working with CG actors and have been stunned on the realsim. I MAY be able to replace some of the poeple with CG. This may save me for my due date. Money is the biggest issue here, can't get all the costumes at once and film. based on current trickling I'll have my costumes by the end of the year and film next year. So sad indeed.

I hope I can beat that estimate, stay tuned.

Ah yes, I know I have not updated in a while. This is because we have been busy getting ready for the real work. I've finished making the sabers (need paint now) and have been working on schedules. The filming portion of the project, unfortunately, has been delayed due to funds and unavailability of the costume makers. We are scheduled to fast filming in September. If I get things together the correct way we can still make up for the time. Anyway, the DVD promo has been a HUGE hit as I keep lending it out to people for home viewing. More soon.

Quick update, I've been working the last few weeks on finishing the screenplay. We still have a few more chapters to finish. After we finish this phase I will work on the storyboard. This is happening in parallel with some scene enhancement and gearing up for filming. Most of the new stuff I will post later as to not give away all the neat details of the film.

Goodbye Terri

I just have to take a moment to say goodbye to Terri Schiavo. I tried my best through phone calls and letters to save her life, but to no avail. Without getting into any of the politics or details of this horrible situation I'll end with saying I wish all of this could have been settled another way. Needless to say her story touched me.

Anyway, my heart goes out to her family. I say goodbye to a such an innocent and lovely person.

Some updates

I added two updates (seen below) to the research facility. I added some of the props I've been working on to it. That scene looks exactly like I imagined it! i changes the lighting to look more scary. I like the medical tools. I'll have rib cutters in the final!

Anyway, I've been finishing up the screenplay as well. I'll burn through it this weekend. We still have 20 more chapters to go through.

Some very good news is with the way things are going we will be ready to get started with principle photography this summer. I'm very excited about this as it's starting to really come together!!

Quite a bit. This week I've been working on a number of things. I've worked one some props (bottles, tables, etc.) Most of these are not something I'd really post since they are additions to scenes. I've improved the water scene as well. it's just open water so it's not much to see yet. I've been holding off a bunch of animation due to the update to Blender's animation system some time very soon. I've been experimenting with several new things that will bring realism to the scenes as well.

But, probably the most important thing I've been working on is the screenplay. Ivonne (my wife and Sith lord) and I have been burning through the script to complete the screenplay and flush out any strange events I may have added. I also will have a test shot of her with a light saber to post soon enough. Stay tuned, now it's getting interesting!

I've not been standing still!! I've been very busy on a few things. I've been learning a bunch about caustics and refraction. I'll have some neat stuff to post soon regarding a scene I forgot about - the city. I didn't work on it because I didn't know what I wanted to to look like. Now I do! I figured since I have a latin america theme to the planet I decided I'd use the Yucatan as guide. In fact the buildings are Myan temples from an ancient city called Uxmal. So far it's looking good. I've learned some new terrain techniques that will show nicely here as well. Stay tuned!

The site I use for graphics is down for maintenance so I can't upload my latest picture I promised to a bunch of you out there (a shot of the hanger with ships docked.) I will tell you it turned out absolutely awsome! I retextured and cleaned the Sith Infiltrator model (my first model) extensivly one night to make this shot. I did the same for the Jedi Star Fighter model. Both of them look amazing compared to the orginal. What a difference a year of experience makes. Since I've learned so much I will remake some of my older scenes and models during post production.

BTW, a year ago I finished the script for this movie and started the graphical journey that completed today!!! It's now been two years in the making for this film. Now I hope to get some real work done this year!

I'll have a few more neat pics soon. I'm working very hard on the back of the hanger. It's extremely detailed and will really please the eye.

I'm looking more and more at what yafray has to offer. I suspect the next release will be killer. Also, the blender internal renderer is catching up rapidly (minus GI and caustics.) I'm going to have some good choices when I'm ready to render the final animations and stills.

Mine Shaft and More!

The next and final(?) scene to work it's way into this phase will be the mine shaft. I'm working on the rock shaft now. Results are looking good. I'll design some huge boulders as well as the ore that is so sought after by Lord Sidius.

It has come to thought I will be CGI-ing some of the characters rather than make-up and latex. With this in mind I will need to work on some of the CGI characters. I have a Weekquay as well as a Rodian model. I'll rip apart a royal guard model from Ep. IV. I want something similar for my dictator's guard. I really need to design the human guard as well. Looks like this project is becoming more and more animated. The problem is, I really don't have the computing power to do all the character modeling. Hmmm. Something to think about.

Ah, the big question. I have made a very detailed list of scenes that will be in the movie. I have a few of them that clearly will be real outside scenes with augmentation. Those will be filmed and thus postponed till post-production phase. Also, I have a few scenes that are 'hot' scenes, as in very requested 3D scene that every Star Wars fan would want. Examples would be Jedi council chambers, senate chambers, etc. As someone has created these, I may wait on these as better technology may be able to import the current version (3DS Max.) So what does that leave me? I think for now I have less 3D to worry about and more props and costumes. So that will probably be the next phase till the end of the year. I will post my wooden hut pictures soon.

Funny thought

Since this is an election year and debates are tonight I'll post this funny sticker I found on someone's website. I was looking around on some Star Wars sites and came across a fake bumper sticker that made me laugh. It said "Palpatine for President '04." So funny, can't say he'd get my vote though. :)

Back to the Darkside topic, I do use real events to inspire my story. The Iraq war, the UN, etc. play a small influence in my story. I found adding a bit of reality to the script gave a nice feel to it. Unlike anything in the press right now I do not present a political position. I feel that is not a important factor. I will say I based my dictator character after Saddam Hussein. I think this will give a real evil feel to one of the baddies.

Anyway, I can't wait to show this film. Stay tuned and thanks for the interest.

I'm working on the adverts for the Nar Shaddaa scene. I'm starting with a cool Gran Gun Ad. Very funny looking. I'm thinking about what I can do about the humanoid characters. I may work on the generic biped model to skin for the dark scenes in the bar, etc. But for now I'm going to finish the adverts then move on.

I'm very worried about the village and capitol city scenes. I absolutely don't have a vision of these yet. All the other scenes were based of my mind's eye. Hmm, have to really think about these. Any thoughts?

Had a small problem

I managed to really muck up my bar scene while working on the outside. Seems I combined some materials to save space but caused some bad shadowing on the round lamps on the ceiling. The whole bar looked like the lights had been turned out. I toiled for two days on this. I'll post some new renders tomorrow as it takes a whole night to render two or three screens. -whew-

I was going over some of my scenes today and thought about the details missing on each scene. I have some rooms that look a bit plain. Although this is not a problem now, I'll have to spend some time (or Ivonne) to go over each room and add some details and decorations. I'm just not very good at it. I've been able to finish two scenes. I'll post the graphics soon. I've performed some calculations and have found I have 23 live-action/CGI mix scenes and 16 weeks to finish them. That is about one scene for every five days. I believe this is obtainable. I finished thew Bar scene and will work on the outside of the bar as well as the power converters in the back of the bar next.

I've focused my effort on the Nar Shaadaa Bar scene. I have a few other shots on Nar Shaadaa as well. I'll work on them once the bar is complete. I have the research facility mostly complete. I still need to model a few weapons on wall racks for one of the rooms as well as the elevator. I decided to shift focus since the elevator scene is essentially a big texture in a small room. I'll post some new shots today (as soon as my picture site is back up.)

I'm frustrated... Very frustrated with the fact I don't have what I need to make my dream. Just like everybody else, right? Bottom line, I need a camera. I need to have some way to film and real soon! It's such a pain to have so much CGI complete with plenty of ideas but no way to film them! As it is I've held off buying any of the props and costums as I don't have a way to film. At this point it's looking real bad for my release schedule in 2005. I hope I can solve this soon.

Here is a render of a newly completed scene of the mountain. This scene is where the dictator is testing a WMD (pictured on one of the rocks.) There is a landing platform for ships as well as doors to a hidden facility built into the mountain. The camera is somewhat far away to show all of the scene.
